2010 Festival d’Hyères in Paris (April 30 to May 30, 2010) continues the recent history of photography by organizing a retrospective of the work of Swiss legend Walter Pfeiffer (represented by Art + Commerce). Walter Pfeiffer will also be present at the Festival as a member of the photography jury.
A forerunner of the intimate, festive snapshot, his shots are made up of a jumble of faces, bodies, colors, textures and various kinds of light. Pfeiffer has created an oeuvre of seminal importance for contemporary photography, encapsulating a decadent lifestyle--his shots of friends who get together in order to party and dress up also convey moments of intimacy, of simple beauty.
Featuring photographs from 1970 to 2000, together with recent fashion series produced in particular for Vogue Paris, Vogue Hommes, Achtung, and Das Magazin, the d’Hyères exhibition will highlight the forward-looking character of Pfeiffer's work and the extraordinary influence it has exerted on the generation represented by Juergen Teller, Wolfgang Tillmans and Ryan McGinley. It will celebrate the perpetual vitality and verve of an artist who today more than ever, camera in hand and with a light heart, seeks out the fleeting manifestations of beauty.
